The Five Stages of Racial Grief

Standard

Denial.

Why are you bringing up race? This isn’t about race. Bad things happen sometimes but that doesn’t mean that people aren’t acting in good faith.

Anger.

You’re just trying to cause trouble, aren’t you? You won’t be happy until everyone is just rioting in the streets. Well, you’re the one who’s obsessed with race, so maybe that makes you the racist, eh?

Bargaining.

Look, I understand. I know the statistics. I’m willing to admit that people of color have it difficult in this world. However, you have to be willing to admit that white people don’t always have it good either.

Depression.

Why do we keep having these same conversations about race? When will it end? Will it ever end?

Acceptance.

Hey, there’s a Criminal Minds marathon on tonight!

Ahem, er. Acceptance.

Maybe I should order pizza. They got that whole 2 for $10 thing going right now.

Hey! Accept that race is the issue here.

Why are you bringing up race? This isn’t about race . . .
